Meet the Artist

Simon J Cooksey

A creative Artist, Designer & 3D modeler

Well, Ow Bist, I'm Simon, an Artist and Designer, Born and raised in Cradley Heath, England, a small industrial town, an area known as the ‘Black Country’. (The Black Country getting its name in the 1800s from the coal industry and heavy smoke in the area.). I created this site to introduce you to an eclectic mix of my hand drawn sketches, prints, personally designed coloring books, and paintings along with my professional experience. Youll be able to see the inspiration from my roots in Hot Rods, my passion for all things car culture and my history in the Black Country. As a child I channeled my energy into Motocross, Karting, Football, Athletics and Cross-Country before moving onto to my adventures including driving a steam roller across the UK, fully rebuilding a 1954 Anglia (Hot Rod), snowboarded in the Alps, brewing beer at my Dad’s Brewery and travelling across Europe, the US and Southeast Asia.

Today, I live in sunny Los Angeles with his husband, Haruty, and our beloved adopted feline, Moira-Rose. I love spending time with nature whether its camping, hiking, riding my bike and being in the garden growing everything and anything.

An Automotive Design story

From Coventry to California, a Creative Odyssey

My journey in automotive design began with a solid foundation at Coventry University. After graduating, the allure of London and the opportunity to work at Ford pulled me in. There, I immersed myself in the design of Asia-specific models, gaining invaluable industry experience.

Bentley was my next destination, where I spent over five years honing my craft. The privilege of working at various VW Group studios, including Ital Design, VW, and Seat, exposed me to different design philosophies and cultures. These experiences enriched my understanding of the automotive design landscape.

Aston Martin offered a new chapter, where I delved into the realm of concept car interiors. The iconic DB10, featured in Spectre, was a highlight of my time there. After three years, the allure of the West Coast beckoned, and I joined Volvo's design team in Camarillo, Ventura.

In Camarillo, I played a pivotal role in expanding the studio and team. From managing my own team to redesigning the studio's interior, I contributed significantly to its growth and transformation. This experience solidified my passion for automotive design and my ability to lead and innovate.

SJCooksey Studios took its first steps in 2024 with the publication of my initial coloring books and sketches. My passion for cars ignited my artistic journey, leading me to explore a diverse range of subjects, from portraits and architecture to everyday inspirations.

To add a personal touch, I now offer custom commissions. Feel free to reach out if you're interested in collaborating on a unique piece.

My growing collection of coloring books, "ICONIC Cars" and "Wanderlust," reflect my love for automobiles and my wanderlust spirit. These books celebrate the beauty of cars and the allure of travel and architecture.

Currently, I'm immersed in creating abstract acrylic art. Inspired by Pop Art, Surrealism, industry, life, politics, my love for cars, and my Black Country roots, my work is a fusion of diverse influences.

THE LOCAL

The Black Country & Cradley Heath!

The Black Country got its name in the mid 1800’s from heavy smoke and coal with towns like Cradley Heath and Dudley having a long history during the Industrial Revolution. Skilled ironworkers forged famous pieces, like the Anchor & Chains for HMS Titanic.

I grew up exploring the canals and industrial areas of the Black Country, particularly Netherton and Dudley. I often rode my motorcycle around the Bumble-Hole and through the Olde Cobbs Engine House, a famous location from the TV show Peaky Blinders. The region is known for its unique architecture, including the Crooked House pub and the Olde Swan Pardoe's. During my university years, I worked at the Olde Swan Pardoe's, helping with renovations and serving beer.

A Car Enthusiast

My enthusiasm for cars blends petrol and creativity, fueled by my early exposure to the hot rod culture in the UK. I grew up immersed with cars from tinkering with hot rods at my dad’s workshop to regularly partaking in cars shows/events. My interests span from watching different types of motorsports such as WRC World Rally, Formula1, drag racing, monster trucks, and British Touring cars. I would also partake in the racing from Karting to drag racing my hot rod. Below you’ll find a collection of cars from my past and present and each involving some form of customization.
