Black Country Roots to Artistic Heights

From my Black Country Roots to Artistic Heights: New Sketches and Inspirations

Hello everyone! I'm excited to share some fresh sketches straight from my creative vault. These pieces are deeply personal, drawing inspiration from two powerful sources: the sleek lines of automobiles and the rugged, industrial landscapes of my hometown in the Black Country, England.

For those unfamiliar, the Black Country is a region with a fascinating and often gritty history. It played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution, earning its name from the soot and smoke that once blanketed the area, a testament to its intense industrial activity.

Here are a few fascinating points about the Black Country:

  • Industrial Heartland:

    • It was a powerhouse of industry, particularly in coal mining and iron production. This fueled much of Britain's industrial growth.

    • The area was famously described as "black by day and red by night" by Elihu Burritt, due to the smoke and the glow of the furnaces.

  • Engineering Prowess:

    • The Black Country is known for its engineering innovation. For example it was where the anchor for the Titanic was created.

    • It was the birth place of the first commercially successful steam engine, the Newcomen engine.

  • A Unique Identity:

    • The Black Country has a distinct dialect and cultural identity, shaped by its industrial heritage.

    • The Black Country has also been declared a UNESCO Global Geopark due to its unique geological importance.

Growing up in this environment, I was surrounded by the raw beauty of industrial architecture and the enduring spirit of its people. That backdrop has profoundly influenced my artistic vision.

In these new sketches, you'll see how I've tried to capture that essence. The sharp angles of classic cars mirror the bold lines of the industrial structures that define the Black Country's landscape. I'm also exploring new sizes, pushing my creative boundaries and offering a fresh perspective.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! What aspects of these sketches resonate with you? And what themes or subjects would you like to see me explore next?

If you're interested in commissioning a piece, please don't hesitate to DM or email me via the links in my bio. You can also find more of my work on my website.
